BIO
Alexis, a professional dancer and instructor based in Washington DC, brings distinctive elegance and expression to the art of belly dance. Inspired by her grandmother, a life-long dancer, Alexis began studying ballet and jazz as a young girl. In 2001, she discovered belly dance, and in 2005, began teaching and performing professionally.
A sought after soloist, Alexis performs her diverse repertoire at many of the finest restaurants, clubs and theaters in Washington DC, as well as at private engagements throughout the metropolitan region. Prior to launching her solo career, Alexis danced in the troupe of Faten Salama (former choreographer for the National Folkloric Troupe of Egypt), and performed as a member of the dynamic Egyptian folkloric troupe, Sharm El Sheikh.
In addition to performing, Alexis is passionate about sharing her knowledge of and enthusiasm for belly dance with students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. She currently sits on the faculty of DC Dance Collective, where she is known as a thorough, yet warm and engaging instructor. Alexis is deeply inspired by the vision of her teacher and mentor, Suhaila Salimpour, and she is the only teacher in the Washington DC area to base her classes purely on Suhaila’s format and technique.
A perpetual student, Alexis is actively continuing her studies with Suhaila (currently in pursuit of her level III certification in the format), and participating in a yoga teacher training program at Studio Serenity. When not dancing, Alexis loves to practice Vinyasa Yoga, read (particularly the teachings of Miguel Ruiz), and is an MBA candidate at American University.
